Children in the waddler room are encouraged to self explore their environment and gain independence and confidence in their abilities. They participate in large group, as well as, individual activities. This classroom is a preparatory class to toddlers and welcomes children starting as soon as 16 months (many may not move to this classroom until 18 months). Many of the toddler philosophies apply in this classroom.

The atmosphere in the room is more structured than infants but children receive plenty of one on one time. Our goal is to develop independence with boundaries while providing a caring, nurturing environment.

During this age of development many different behaviors surface. Most children still communicate through actions and start to demonstrate frustration when their actions are misunderstood. Teachers are encouraged to teach through positive reinforcements such as hugs, smiles and praise. Teachers also discourage inappropriate actions such as hitting, biting, and tantrums.

Many new experiences await the waddler class. They venture outside the classroom environment to enjoy playing in the gym or Toddler-appropriate playground (weather permitting), developing large motor skills. Hands-on projects are incorporated to encourage fine motor development. They learn to sleep on cots, sit at a table and eat with utensils. They also begin to learn the concept of sharing and “no."
